Kaja is de ultieme optimist. Zelfs het feit dat ze getrouwd is met een man die nauwelijks interesse in haar heeft omdat hij haar niet meer aantrekkelijk vindt kan dit niet veranderen. Maar als haar nieuwe buren een perfect stel lijken te zijn, begint er toch iets bij Kaja te knagen. Haar nieuwe buren zijn succesvol, knap, zingen in een koor en hebben zelfs een kind geadopteerd uit Ethiopië. Via hun leert Kaja een totaal nieuwe wereld kennen, maar haar eigen wereld staat daardoor wel compleet op zijn kop.
Happy Happy balanceert perfect tussen drama en zwarte komedie. Regisseuse Anne Sewitsky geeft haar personages alle ruimte om te schitteren terwijl de zwarte humor, het sporadische absurdisme en de strakke vertelstructuur de film maken tot een prachtig kijkje naar de vormbaarheid en veerkracht van sommige relaties. Niet voor niets is de film door Noorwegen uitgekozen als hun inzending voor de oscars in 2012.

Kaja is an optimistic and easygoing housewife, despite her loneliness and the fact that her husband won't have sex with her. When Elisabeth and Sigve, who seem like the perfect husband and wife, move in next door, Kaja is thrilled by their sophistication. They're beautiful, they have an adopted black son, and in their spare time, they sing in a choir. An indiscreet moment between Kaja and Sigve ignites a full-on affair, but just as her sexual liberation comes within reach, the inevitable truths and secrets tumble out - perhaps for the best.
Set in the dead of winter in the middle of nowhere, the locale of Happy, Happy is crucial to balancing the film as both sex comedy and drama. Director Anne Sewitsky allows her skilled actors to shine while dark humor, some flat-out hilarity, and tight storytelling drive this delightful look at the malleability and resilience of adult relationships. It is no mystery why the film is chosen by Norway as their entry or the Oscars in 2012.
