Terri vertelt het verhaal van een te dikke tiener die in de knoop zit met zichzelf. Hij woont bij zijn oom, die langzaam seniel wordt. Op school wordt hij gepest, maar dat doet hem niet veel. Ook gepest wordt de ooit populaire Heather, die door roddels tot een outcast is gemaakt. Terri is de enige die hier niet in meedoet en de twee raken bevriend. Ook bevriend raakt Terri met de schooldirecteur, die vastbesloten is de jongen te helpen. Maar soms is jezelf blijven dapperder dan veranderen voor iemand anders.
Films over outcasts op de middelbare school zijn er genoeg. Terri is gelukkig heel anders. Terri is een slimme, aardige en zelfverzekerde jongen. Hij draagt pyjama's naar school, gewoon omdat ze passen. Hij heeft niet de drang om te veranderen of zich aan te passen aan de verwachtingen van mensen om hem heen. Wij als kijker hebben die drang veel meer. Wij hopen tevergeefs dat Terri zal veranderen, dat hij een 'normale' tiener zal worden die niet gepest wordt door zijn klasgenoten. Dat hij dat niet doet, laat zijn sterke karakter zien, maar ook het karakter van regisseur Azazel Jacobs, die met Terri één van de beste films over tienerjaren maakt van de afgelopen jaren.
Sensitive, overweight and awkward, Terri is painfully aware that his circumstances put him irredeemably outside the inner circle of high school life. Resigned to his outsider status, Terri is surprised when his tough-talking high school vice principal, Mr. Fitzgerald, takes an interest in him. Under Mr. Fitzgerald's tutelage, Terri befriends a pair of fellow misfits, Chad an edgy loner whose rebellion masks his own insecurities, and Heather, a sexually precocious girl whose beauty proves to be a trap of its own. The three teenagers, so different on the surface, but all outcasts in the rigid high school hierarchy, find an unexpected, imperfect bond that reflects the tenuousness, of the adolescent experience.
There are plenty films about high school outcasts. Thankfully Terri is different. Terri is a smart, friendly and confident boy. He wears pajamas to school, simply because they fit. He doesn't have the urge to change of adapt to the expectations of those around him, but we as viewers want him to have this urge. We hope that Terri will change and become a "normal" teenager who is not bullied by his classmates. The fact that Terri is not bothered with this shows his strong character, but also the character of director Azazel Jacobs, who made one of the best movies about teenagers in recent years.
